A well-intentioned plan missing teeth and a sense of scale

Patrick Cuba•1 month ago I like data centers. I think Internet is good. I revile the proportion of beneficial to maleficent uses of these technologies.I am sure we cannot keep them out. I do not have the money to combat people who will let them pay for approval. I think this direction of clear regulation is the way to go.This document, however, notices the problems and does not escalate a solution. Not knowing how this will be resolved makes it impossible to get on board. Generic cynicism has unfortunately proven more useful lately than democratic trust. There is no policy guidance here and I think at least some of the people who helped to draft it must know this.

Not worth the risk.

Patrick Cuba•8 months ago The building in this case has already been well used for people and only failed because of poor management/landlord. Data centers involve a heavy investment in the infrastructure for water and electricity that we all have to pick up even if it is not directly subsidized. They are noisy and dump heat right into the environment which is why they are often out near power plants. Finally, it is really hard to reuse a building after it is abandoned, which will happen when there is a better deal with better energy and tax deals elsewhere or (god forbid) the AI bubble pops.
