Sara Edgar9 months ago The city should work to build a public/private partnership with area trade schools, construction companies, area schools of architecture, and existing programs such as Americorps and Habitat for Humanity to build a multi-discipline living classroom where the city could supply LRA properties to be rebuilt or new homes constructed on vacant parcels as part of a long term program to train individuals in home construction and repair, provide homes at reduced cost for low and middle income families, and ensure LRA properties are rebuilt in a quick manner before they fall into disrepair and become a danger to the community.

Daniel Tobben5 months ago Great to Use Eminent Domain re Paul McKee’s properties near the Geospatial Center. Past due!! Policy statement—-time to sell the Water Division to a private operator. It should be conditioned on $xxxx being spent on the plant and distribution center. Water officials would know what is needed. On line sources indicate STL would receive in the hundreds of millions. Require a 2 year rate freeze, but water is the oil equivalent in STL, so we not only fix the system, but make it a real asset for residents and businesses. When finalized, decisions about water will be financial, not political; and will not be governed by the lack of City resources. If 1/2 the money received the sale was kept in reserve; the City would have a cushion and the rainy day fund The other half could be used for worthy City projects and initiatives

Barbara M9 months ago The newer 12 member board of alderman seems ineffectual because they are stretched to the limits at most. I noticed that some alderman are as busy as bees and are being approached by citizens outside their ward boundaries to find out information. With the May Tornado, many are working almost 24 hours a day and have placed themselves on call.I call for a new election on the matter in order to get the citizens approval on the new board structure since some time has passed. By the way, whaterver happened to the "revision" of the City Charter? It seems stalled or quietly dropped without fanfare.

Joel Niemerg9 months ago Our sidewalks are a hot mess for a lot of reasons. One being tree roots lifting and damaging the sidewalk. If it's a huge tree it's susceptible to damaging sidewalks. Walk around Soulard and Benton Park and you'll see what I mean. It's a safety issue and does not allow for ADA compliance. A simple solution that cities use is cutting out a portion of the sidewalk to allow for root growth and prevent damage. Otherwise we end up with bike ramps and tripping hazards instead of smooth sidewalks. A little follow through and care goes a long way.

Malik L9 months ago Develop in-park Forest Park Senior Living facilities for long-time senior residents of low to moderate incomes atop the current parking lot reserved for the Visitor Center.This area is a prime location not only because it is quite literally in the park, but also because it has easy access to the Forest Park-DeBaliviere MetroLink Station.Seniors from working class backgrounds deserve to retire in peace, and the city should strive to provide seniors with some sort of perk for having stayed committed to our city. The wealthy should not be the only ones afforded the luxuries of life.

**ARThurine Harris**9 months ago It is well documented that the quality of a city's public school system determines the quality of the city at large. As a result, the City of St. Louis can never thrive if it does not adequately educate it's citizens. For as long as I can remember, the St. Louis Public Schools (SLPS) system has functioned largely independent of the City of St. Louis. Yet, ongoing, self-inflicted wounds to the operation and reputation of SLPS have undeniably impacted the quality of life of ALL City residents, in the form of increased insurance costs, crime, decreased population, etc. Thus, I propose that City officials create the foundation for a system that gives the City of St. Louis (and by default, it's residents) more input into SLPS operations. We are in a crisis, and as such, we can not leave the governance of our public school system to a few untrustworthy individuals who often have few toes to our city. To put things in perspective, I was recently informed that there are SLPS teachers who, despite working 11 hours days educating our youth before, during and after school hours, HAVE NOT BEEN PAID FOR HOURS THAT THEY HAVE WORKED. They are exasperated with the Board and frustrated with the teachers union -- both of whom the teachers feel routinely ignore their desires. What happens if/when these educators get fed up enough to walk out?? St. Louis will have yet *another* crisis to tend to. For this reason, I implore City officials to start the process of developing a relationship with SLPS that gives the City more control over SLPS. Either way, we all pay the price for SLPS injustice and dysfunction.✨

Barbara Martin9 months ago I've heard from many residents who are complaining about unsafe residential streets. Some drivers speed up and down our streets. Some drivers drive on one-way streets going the wrong way. Many of our residential streets have derelict and abandoned vehicles parked pm them and should be removed. On some blocks, people are running their businesses on the blocks they live. I believe that is against Zoning regulations. My proposal is to make our residential streets safer.

By 2031, Missouri will face a professional football vacuum as the Chiefs relocate to Kansas. This proposal mandates that any new NFL tenant at a North Riverfront Stadium facility be structured as a community-owned non-profit, with 51% of voting shares held by Missouri residents. This initiative directly challenges the NFL’s Rule 3.2a as an illegal monopoly and an unenforceable restraint of trade. Managed by a board of fans (the "Audio Department") and city officials, the team ensures permanent residency and local profit-reinvestment. We aren't building for billionaires; we’re producing the "Director’s Cut" of STL football. Our city. Our team. Run the show.

Joel Wilper9 months ago This program would be a bold, citywide investment in our children and families, and not only could greatly assist current families in St. Louis, but would also attract new families to our city. Modeled on the successful Rx Kids initiative in Flint, Michigan, this program would provide direct, unconditional cash support to all pregnant residents and parents of infants in St. Louis. For more information on the Flint, MI program, please read here.Every pregnant person in St. Louis would be eligible for the program, regardless of income or eligibility (thus reducing stigma and encouraging growth in the program). Sign-ups would be streamlined and easy to follow. At it's core, the benefits of the program would be: A one time, $1,500 cash payment to expectant mothers Monthly cash payments of $500 during the child's first year of life A study from the University of Michigan found that Flint's program "lowered rates of maternal postpartum depression, stabilized families’ housing and improved infant outcomes – saving millions of dollars in NICU spending" (The Guardian). A similar program in St. Louis could dramatically strengthen economic stability for some of our most vulnerable residents, and by giving children and families a strong, healthy start, we can help ensure long-term community well-being.The program would be funded through a mix of city resources, philanthropic partnerships, and federal/state maternal health grants, following the Flint model. This collaborative funding approach ensures sustainability while leveraging outside support for a high-impact local solution. Even with the political climate that we are currently in, there is bipartisan support for providing young children with more assistance. If we start working towards this at the local level, we can then start conversations with nonprofits, philanthropists, the MO government, and the federal government to help obtain the necessary grants.

Malik L9 months ago Drunk driving endangers everyone. However, if we design our city such that establishments primarily serving alcohol are car-centric, how can we expect meaningful change on this issue? Therefore, I propose a few changes:(1) Areas along corridors with frequent public transit (at least 30 minute headways) should be the only areas where businesses seeking liquor licenses should be allowed.(2) Establishments serving alcohol as its primary product should be explicitly exempt from parking mandates.

John Parker9 months ago St. Louis is a city primed for urban orchards. In our city we could have apples, peaches, pears and other fruit trees growing. Our kids don't always have access to fresh fruits and vegetables. The boomer generation knew to grow fruit trees, but after them came gen X who had other distractions, and Y who is so far away from this type of thinking it is silly. Gen Z might think it fun, interesting and retro to get involved in urban orchards. Perhaps the Y gen will pick up on it. Gen X is older and wiser now and probably would take to it.The city has a lot of vacant land that they could use for urban orchards. (If people like Paul McKee are reigned in from wasting our land and buildings). If there is an orchard of apple trees, it could be seen as a public asset. In Jamaica they do this with mangos. Anyone can come pick mangos for their own consumption. It doesn't have to be perfect. If our kids are eating more fruits and vegetables, it's a win. If people who have little to nothing at least get some fresh fruit that they can pick themselves any time they want, it would help with public health. There are a lot of positives, and very few, if any, negatives.

Abby Thacker9 months ago St. Louis has a well known issue with problem properties owned by absentee owners who either lack the interest or funds to return them to our housing stock. By investing in training people, especially marginalized groups like the homeless, LGBT+ people, and women in trades like masonry, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and painting, the City could restore both LRA-owned housing and problem properties to the housing stock, while creating a long-term income stream for the City by renting out the housing units at sub-market rates. This would bolster the local economy in the short term through supplies, increase the tax base by giving people who might otherwise be unemployed or have entry-level jobs the skills to obtain high-paying jobs in the private construction sector, and increase community confidence both in the City and their streets, with safe, historic housing taking the place of derelict buildings. A pilot program could be established with a class of 30 or so individuals being trained on the job to restore any given 4-family house in the LRA’s portfolio. This would account for any turnover in the program and ensure that there is an adequate number of trainees for each trade.

Zachariah Young9 months ago Highway overpasses that connect Benton Park and Soulard at Pestalozzi, Arsenal, and Utah are exposed. The city should fence the overpasses up to 8 feet high and protect the sidewalk on the street side as well for any overpass over a highway. The current concrete structures that protect pedestrians from the edge of the overpass are shorter than a few feet and there is very little if any gap between the sidewalk and the street. This makes walking with children, dogs, or even a group of friends feel risky.

Malik L9 months ago Adopt a plan to add new city MetroLink stations to the existing MetroLink route such that there is at least one station within at least every 1/2 mile. In areas designed for more density such as Downtown or Downtown West, this should be increased to every 1/4 mile.These requirements would require the city to plan for at least 6-8 additional stations within the Central Corridor. Below are a few suggestions for potential stations.2-3 stations between Grand Station and Union Station. S Compton Ave S Ewing Ave Jefferson Ave 1 station between Cortex Station and Grand Station.S Vandeventer Ave1 station between Central West End Station and Cortex Station.S Newstead Ave2-3 stations between Forest Park-DeBaliviere Station and Central West End Station Lindell Blvd & Union Blvd Grand Dr in Forest Park Forest Park Pkwy & Kingshighway This proposal commits the city to a vision of where future stations should be added, how they should be prioritized, and the timeline for constructing them by 2050. Potential funding sources should be considered as well. For example, the city may need to create a transit expansion fund with a half-cent sales tax or parking benefit districts (see more from Parking Reform or the Federal Highway Administration).Stations developed within closer proximity to one another could help incentivize more development along the central corridor, ease access to job sites along the corridor (e.g., MilliporeSigma and Residence Inn in Midtown).
