Malik L1 year ago Drunk driving endangers everyone. However, if we design our city such that establishments primarily serving alcohol are car-centric, how can we expect meaningful change on this issue? Therefore, I propose a few changes:(1) Areas along corridors with frequent public transit (at least 30 minute headways) should be the only areas where businesses seeking liquor licenses should be allowed.(2) Establishments serving alcohol as its primary product should be explicitly exempt from parking mandates.

Malik L1 year ago We deserve urban public spaces without loud engines, pollution, and reckless driving. Cities abroad figured this out, and even other U.S. cities figured this out, but in St. Louis we only experience a taste of this during a few festivals such as Cinco de Mayo or Mardi Gras. Therefore, I propose that the city experiment with pilot programs to allow communities the opportunity to study the impact of more long-term street closures to car on the surrounding communities.This could require some of the following steps: Determine a list of prospective quarter-mile street segments for car-free street pilot programs in the following categories: a neighborhood commercial corridor, a residential area, and Downtown. All segments should be contiguous. All segments should also have direct bus or MetroLink access. Designate at least one per category to move forward with the support of the local community organizations. Implement a study before and during the pilot to gauge the environmental and social impacts of the pilot programs on each segment. Collaborate with community organizations to determine how to activate these spaces whether for food stalls, patios, performance space, mobile art galleries, or something else. Implement a pilot plan for 6 consecutive months and allow options to renew the program or make permanent changes after the pilot.

James Duda11 months ago Downtown St. Louis is sorely lacking a safe place for residents to play sports together. Tower Grove Park has a tennis/pickleball court setup that requires payment for admission. A new downtown park could take advantage of a similar pay-to-reserve model to help pay for a park attendant to keep things in order. In addition to pickleball and tennis, this park could maybe be big enough to include mini astroturf soccer fields and maybe basketball courts. If we are trying to make downtown more residential, there has to be stimulating things for residents to do. While Arch Park is suitable for walking and Citygarden is nice for relaxation, there's currently no central outdoor sports hub. Given the popularity of pickleball, this park could significantly increase activity in the business district, making downtown feel more like a community.The park could also incorporate underground parking. WashU has shown us that tucking parking below the surface allows us better utilize and beautify community spaces. These parking spaces could start as paid public spaces and eventually be reconsecrated as a residential parking if the RWE is ever turned into a residential building.This may be a pie in the sky idea, but I thought I’d share my thoughts!

Aron Malone8 months ago The Missouri Public Ownership ActLeverage the Rams Settlement interest to seed the "St. Louis Show Runners," a fan-owned NFL franchise. By 2031, Missouri will face a professional football vacuum as the Chiefs relocate to Kansas. This proposal mandates that any new NFL tenant at a North Riverfront Stadium facility be structured as a community-owned non-profit, with 51% of voting shares held by Missouri residents. This initiative directly challenges the NFL’s Rule 3.2a as an illegal monopoly and an unenforceable restraint of trade. Managed by a board of fans (the "Audio Department") and city officials, the team ensures permanent residency and local profit-reinvestment. We aren't building for billionaires; we’re producing the "Director’s Cut" of STL football. Our city. Our team. Run the show.

Philip Smith1 year ago England has cameras everywhere, and police can access footage to help solve crimes. I propose a pilot program that would involve putting lots of cameras in a high crime area to see the impact it has on crime and crime fighting. There are already cameras everywhere- why not put one’s up that are a little higher quality, spaced in a way that limits blind spots? Focusing on crime reduction will go much further towards keeping residents in the city than new event centers and beautification projects will.

Malik L1 year ago I call on the city to create a Department of Urban Agriculture to guide the creation of a thriving urban agricultural industry. After all, it was agriculture that helped the very first civilizations form and grow.Furthermore, our city has the space to accomplish this, we have excessive parking structures, open lawns, riverfront land, and vacant lots. We just need to determine whether the land is arable or could be made as such. I would also encourage the centering of native edible foods such as wild rice and pawpaw trees. This would require increasing education about these foodstuffs and this may require building alliances with indigenous groups with a historical connection to the land..This could be a solution to the inflating grocery prices, food deserts, and shrinking tax base of our city. The state and federal government are clearly going to continue their hostility toward us. They are unlikely to fully fund transit expansion, tornado relief, public schools, and SNAP benefits. Furthermore, large corporate agricultural industries are attempting to squeeze out local farmers. By building an industry based on urban agriculture, our city could rebuild our economy, create new jobs, and serve local needs. If successful, we could even export goods to our neighbors.A Department of Urban Agriculture should do the following:(1) Create a plan to expand the urban agricultural industry.(2) Designate whether land is arable or can be made arable easily.(3) Create grants for local farmers and farming cooperatives to settle and work in the city.(4) Facilitate educational programming and messaging to promote the overall mission.(5) Promote overall food independence and economic independence.

Dana Getz1 year ago Cover the graffiti on the gravois viaduct with art murals celebrating bevo mill history. Currently the viaduct is covered in graffiti and the city csb states they will not remove the graffiti as it is along route 30 and missouri state is responsible (gravois) and also states graffiti removal is to dangerous at this location. However doing nothing has just led to more graffiti on the viaduct walls. I propose we cover the graffiti with artist murals depicting the history of bevo mill neighborhood.

Lisa Horsey1 year ago The Problem: Drivers have difficulty seeing road markings due to the use of non-reflextive paint causing unnecessarily dangerous road conditions.The Proposal: The city should start using long lasting reflective paint on all high traffic roads, at the bare minimum. Optimally, non-reflective paint should only be used in parking areas.The Argument: Where are the road markings? Well, seemingly they can only be found during the day, in good weather, and only if the sun is at the right angle.The city has been focused on improving certain intersections and stretches of road. That's fine, but it is only an improvement for those who travel in specific areas. And what good is it if you cant see the lane markings in the redesigned intersection or road, anyway? This proposal would effect many roads and intersections throughout the city, if not all of them.Currently, the streets department uses, at best, an acetone-based traffic paint. This cheap paint is not inherently reflective and requires roads lines to be repainted every 1-2 years. Glass beads should be added to the wet paint to make it reflective. However, glass beads do not appear to be in use or at least not in any quantity to be effective.Someone along the line probably thought this would be a great way for the city to save money. However, this "savings" comes as a cost to residents by creating unnecessarily dangerous road conditions on already deteriorating roadways. This results in avoidable property damage, traffic accidents, injuries, and probably even death. Of course, this leads to lost wages, repair bills, medical bills, and higher insurance premiums in our area.So, what we're doing now comes at a cost to residents, but I'm not sure it actually saves the city anything either. What's the cost of repainting the roads every year or two? The crews, equipment, and fuel can't be cheap. How about the cost of emergency responders to attend to accidents with injury? Or for 911 to even field these calls? The Streets Dept and emergency responders surely have much more pressing matters to attend to.Let's evaluate this and make an improvement that all St. Louisans can actually see.Photo is of Hampton & Arsenal from Google Maps dated July 2025. Joshua Lawrence1 year ago The City of St. Louis has the option and opportunity for change. We can all lift our hearts and support the newest and highest Civic Honor: The St. Louis Medal of Freedom. Inspired by the national Presidential Medal of Freedom, this would be a gorgeous metallic medal that would feature two people in a car going “hey look, there’s the arch”. Also, Bowser from Mario Brothers would be flying on a surfboard like the Silver Surfer (possibly doing a kick flip over it). – SEE ARTIST RENDERING BELOW.It should be given to Bevo resident Joshua Lawrence. As a lifelong St. Louisan, he is the smartest, most beautifulest, and greatest St. Louisian that is currently around – tied with all the other St. Louisans. We are all the smartest, most beautifulist people around, but just Joshua would get the award because why not. In the interest of this not violating the rules of self-promotion, I promise that while I am the one ultimately accepting it, I’ll be real cool about it.As a celebration and morale-building event. The medal would be presented to Joshua alongside some other stuff. Including, but not limited to: A five-hour-long “Basset Hound Waddle” wherein all basset hounds in the City of St. Louis would hang out. Getting Joshua guitar lessons so he can learn some sick solos. $200K because he could use the money. A parade w/ a float contest for whoever builds one that closest resembles Donkey Kong. By honoring Joshua Lawrence as the first to wear this solid gold masterpiece, we are sending a clear message: he and all other St. Louisans rock. The deep-rooted hopes of the working class bloom like wildflowers in our beautiful town, as we continue traveling through lives of hope, peace, and love like Moses to the Promised Land of Canaan. When, in our sacred hour, God invites His almighty choir to gather and sing, the St. Louis Medal of Freedom shall be the microphone in which we sing.

Chris Orlet11 months ago Absentee landlords and short-term rental companies like Air BNB and Verbo are teaming up to destroy too many of our residential neighborhoods by turning what should be homes for families into fly-by-night hotels and party places. Absentee landlords often think they can make a quick buck by turning their residential properties into short-term rentals. The problem is that one's residential street soon becomes infested with these mini-hotels. This has several negative effects on a residential street. 1. Instead of families moving in and solidifying your neighborhood, you have random strangers staying next door, often partying till the wee hours (especially if the short-term rental has a hot tub). 2. Short-term rentals destroy property values. No one wants to move in next door to a 24-hour party place. 3. Short-term rentals breed more short-term rentals, until your residential street is suddenly a commercial street.Short-term rentals are inimical to residents' quality of life. If Hilton cannot build a hotel in the middle of your block, Air BNB should not be able to turn the three-bedroom house next door into a hotel.

Nicholas Burton1 year ago I propose that we offer a tax incentive, grant, or other financial benefit to companies that occupy office space downtown and require 100% in-person work.Office space is expensive. It is much cheaper for these companies to let employees work from home and reduce the amount of real estate they pay for. But with a 22.1% office vacancy rate, and most companies allowing hybrid or remote work, much of this "occupied" office actually ends up sitting empty.With over 200 office buildings, one would (and should) expect local shops and restaurants to be thriving. But during the weekday, downtown looks like a ghost town. The streets are lined with empty storefronts, shuttered restaurants, and the foot traffic is minimal.If you want to bring people downtown, building new apartment buildings isn't going to do it. There isn't enough life downtown to attract people to these expensive new apartment buildings when they can find cheaper rents in more lively parts of the city.If you incentivize companies to utilize the office space they occupy and reward them for injecting life back into downtown, you will see the effects ripple through the local economy. Coffee shops will fill with people grabbing a latte on the way to a morning meeting. Restaurants will be packed with coworkers walking over from their office to grab a bite. Bars will see locals stopping in for happy hours. Shops will attract lunchtime shoppers and commuters doing a few last-minute pickups before heading out of the city. When more people start to spend time there, businesses will thrive, people will start to move closer to where they work, and we would see the renewal of Downtown St. Louis.

Robert Rushing1 year ago Most of the major attractions of Downtown/Midtown are too spread out to be walkable or visit without having to drive between them. We need three loops of trolley or special bus service that takes visitors to the locations without having to drive or repark. For St Louis to bring visitors back to downtown, we need a way to tie it all together and make it cohesive. 1) Ballpark village to the Arch to along Broadway to Washington for America's Center up Washington to Tucker, Tucker to Market then down Market to the Stadium. 2) Up Olive for Central Library, Washington spots, City Museum, to Jefferson / Soccer stadium, over to Market for Union Station, Enterprise Center, War Memorial, City Hall, to Tucker over to Olive. 3) From Jefferson up Market / Forest Park Pkwy for Chaifetz Arena to Grand for the start of Cortex up Grand to SLU and Grand Center back down Olive to Jefferson.

Richard Bose1 year ago Gas stations are vectors for crime, pollution, blight, and car crashes and car dependency. They are low-productivity land uses that create high demands on city services and infrastructure. The city should institute a medallion system to cap the number of them. Existing ones would get one of course. If someone wants to build a new gas station, they would need to buy a medallion from another. The city could have a standing offer to buy one, if someone wants to sell to reduce the number of gas stations over time. One nuance to address is this would encourage bigger gas stations. Perhaps a cap on the number of pumps too.

Jeff Schneider1 year ago Given that Chippewa St in the Southampton area is largely a residential street with some businesses, I would like to see street improvements similar to those on Kingshighway. Adding a turn lane with medians and reducing it to one lane in each direction would significantly cut down on the excessive speeding. Since buying our house in April, no less than 6 car crashes have occurred within a block of life house. A few of those resulted in cars up on sidewalks outside of people's homes. It's a residential area and the roads should reflect that.

Jeremy Lehmann1 year ago Gun violence continues to be a problem in the City of St. Louis. Just this week, in the span of just an hour, 9 people were shot in 4 separate shooting incidents. Gun buy back programs are an effective way to reduce the number of firearms in circulation within our communities. Simply reducing the total number of firearms that are loosely available could keep guns out of the hands of irresponsible users and could help create safer streets in our city. There would be no required changes to firearm legislation in order to institute the gun buy back program. Details, such as compensation for types of guns, amnesty or anonymity, and how the guns are disposed of will need to be debated.

Malik L1 year ago Develop in-park Forest Park Senior Living facilities for long-time senior residents of low to moderate incomes atop the current parking lot reserved for the Visitor Center.This area is a prime location not only because it is quite literally in the park, but also because it has easy access to the Forest Park-DeBaliviere MetroLink Station.Seniors from working class backgrounds deserve to retire in peace, and the city should strive to provide seniors with some sort of perk for having stayed committed to our city. The wealthy should not be the only ones afforded the luxuries of life.

Donna Agah11 months ago The current governing structure presents two competing visions: one from the Mayor and the other from the President of the Board of Aldermen. It is challenging for City voters to evaluate performance with this overly complicated system of governance. Let's see if we collective can do better by changing the City Charter as needed to complete the following: Eliminate the Estimates & Apportionment Committee Eliminate the President of the Board of Aldermen, an elected position Eliminate the Comptroller elected position The mayor chairs Board of Aldermen meetings, names committee chairs, and assigns work to committees. The mayor can continue to veto legislation, and that veto can be overridden with a majority vote from the Board of Aldermen. The mayor appoints a city manager with the approval of the majority of the Board of Aldermen. The mayor appoints a Financial Director, with the approval of the majority of the Board of Aldermen, who handles all financial matters on behalf of the City. A Comptroller with current CPA licensing will report to the Financial Director. The Comptroller will perform audits within the City. The Mayor will reorganize staff positions within the City Manager, Mayor, and Board staff without adding new positions. If prudent, positions will be eliminated.
