Heather Griffin10 months ago We do not need another data center in St. Louis City!!! The 12 (or more) we currently have are doing enough damage. And these companies do not care about the people in our community. Data centers negatively impact their surroundings through high water consumption, wastewater contamination, significant greenhouse gas emissions from electricity use and backup generators, air pollution from power generation, noise pollution from cooling and backup systems. They also create electronic waste, and their placement can put an additional strain on local utilities, utility costs, loss of cultural areas and add to existing issues like health disparities in communities already burdened by environmental concerns. The City’s already struggling to keep up with basic services—so how can we expect it to make sure data centers are following the rules when you don't have enough staff to enforce these new rules? Just look at the numbers: the Streets Department had over 8,500 open pothole requests in January, more than double its target (and can't even bother to response to CSB requests). Illegal dumping was taking nearly 39 days to address—13 times longer than the goal. And in the Building Division, over a third of service requests were overdue. Meanwhile, the police department is short about 200 officers, and the homicide unit has a DNA backlog of over 550 cases. Now we’re talking about regulating data centers that could use as much energy as 13,000 homes? NO THANK YOU. Do more to save our City, and this ain't it.
