Partial cut out of sidewalk when a tree is planted so the roots don't damage the sidewalk

Our sidewalks are a hot mess for a lot of reasons. One being tree roots lifting and damaging the sidewalk. If it's a huge tree it's susceptible to damaging sidewalks. Walk around Soulard and Benton Park and you'll see what I mean. It's a safety issue and does not allow for ADA compliance. A simple solution that cities use is cutting out a portion of the sidewalk to allow for root growth and prevent damage. Otherwise we end up with bike ramps and tripping hazards instead of smooth sidewalks. A little follow through and care goes a long way.
