Macklind Road Diet
From "Share Your Policy Ideas"
Go to the project
Macklind Ave between Chippewa and Sutherland has a very poor design, where people frequently ignore lanes, or immediately shift from the right lane after cross Chippewa to the south into the left lane. Also, the crossings at Winona and Bancroft have no crosswalks and are much wider than the rest of the Macklind corridor. A road diet should align this with the rest of the street limiting it 2 lanes, no turn lane, and intersection bump outs for pedestrian crossings. No car parking spaces should be added since Macklind in this section is a cross street between residential roads, and not a business zone like it is further to the south.

These “road diets” are more dangerous for pedestrians

At the very least from Sutherland to Mardel (or perhaps up to Pernod) there could be buffered bike lanes in this area with the road diet. Although the Southbound (downhill) section would need to have a sharrow to accommodate a left turn lane https://imgur.com/a/o1oOro2

As a bike rider, I support this! It is very hard to anticipate what cars will do, and I think for cars, what I will do when the second lane ends. It feels very strange for this to be two lanes, and it makes it less safe for all. I also agree that Macklind all the way through should be 25.

Please add correcting the speed signs that now read (going south on Macklind from Chippewa): school zone 25; speed limit 30; Buder School. Wouldn't it be clearer to have: speed limit 30; school zone 25, Buder School? Thanks.

@Donna Agah Theres just no point in Macklind being a 30 at all. Its a 30 all the way from Loughbourgh to Manchester, despite being very residential throughout that whole area. It should be a permanent 25.

@Adam Treaster , I just read that Trailnet has initiated a drive to change the speed limits to 25 on arterial streets and 20 on local streets. I agree with you that Macklind needs to be designated as a local street--even through the local business district south of Chippewa. Whatever the final decision, the school zones need to be defined appropriately, and the one around Buder is not.
