Gun Buy Back Program

From "Share Your Policy Ideas"

Go to the project

Gun violence continues to be a problem in the City of St. Louis. Just this week, in the span of just an hour, 9 people were shot in 4 separate shooting incidents.

Gun buy back programs are an effective way to reduce the number of firearms in circulation within our communities. Simply reducing the total number of firearms that are loosely available could keep guns out of the hands of irresponsible users and could help create safer streets in our city.

There would be no required changes to firearm legislation in order to institute the gun buy back program. Details, such as compensation for types of guns, amnesty or anonymity, and how the guns are disposed of will need to be debated.

Gun buyback programs are fantastic!! And for two main reasons. First, the criminals who use them during crimes would much rather have $150 cold hard cash in their pocket than a flimsy tool that enables them to steal $150-$15000 per robbery with little chance of being caught. Second, my 3d printers are READY for this opportunity.
I think that this is well meaning (obviously!) but I don’t think it’s the way forward with reducing gun violence. I use to be a supporter of gun buy backs, but they’re reeeeallly ineffective and efforts can be directed elsewhere. I’m a huge fan of promoting the Prop S Youth Safety Programs more than anything. There’s a pretty stellar piece in the Atlantic about Gun Buy Back ineffectiveness by David Graham it’s not letting me link to. But, ultimately it’s thesis is that after looking into em it found that GBB gets mainly older and ineffective guns, rarely trace back to any crime, and their promotion/utilization by people are limited in comparison to other programs.

@Joshua Lawrence Thanks for the feedback--one of my ideas to help drive effectiveness would be to place a higher dollar value on newer model, functioning handguns as opposed to antique hunting rifles.

@Jeremy Lehmann I hear you. I believe the gun buy back programs mentioned have done the same as well.
