Gas Station Medallion System

From "Share Your Policy Ideas"

Go to the project

Gas stations are vectors for crime, pollution, blight, and car crashes and car dependency. They are low-productivity land uses that create high demands on city services and infrastructure. The city should institute a medallion system to cap the number of them. Existing ones would get one of course. If someone wants to build a new gas station, they would need to buy a medallion from another. The city could have a standing offer to buy one, if someone wants to sell to reduce the number of gas stations over time. One nuance to address is this would encourage bigger gas stations. Perhaps a cap on the number of pumps too.

Not to mention gas stations also make the land unusable for future residential use because of the environmental contamination.
