Some great ideas have already been shared - renovating and expanding SLPS facilities, expanding SLPS free Pre-K to infant & toddler programs. I would add a few things - first, a current struggle: ARCHES funding has been cut, which means that my children's amazing Title 1 neighborhood elementary school is struggling to provide necessary Aftercare, when we used to have Before & Aftercare programs. We must restore funding for Before & Aftercare at all SLPS schools, starting with Title 1 schools, which provide necessary care, programming & meals for so many children. Second, I know the School Moratorium was never official, but why have 2 more charter schools opened this year (that I know of), while 2 have closed? Can we all agree to the City Wide Education Plan and quit destabilizing things in order to experiment on our children and/or further weaken public education? Please let us all pour our efforts and energy into a unified City Wide Education Plan with the schools we have, focusing especially on our publicly governed public schools in SLPS. Thank you.

Let's not co-mingle things like Before and Aftercare (really just daycare by another name) and the main mission of the schools: to educate our children to provide them the best opportunity to realize their potential and be happy and productive members of our society. In that regard, lack of money is NOT the issue. Saint Louis Public Schools spend the most per student and get the least benefit. Looking at individual public schools, city public schools occupy 5 of the top 10 spending spots for high schools, and 8 of the top 10 for high schools. ONLY 30%! So, let's stop claiming the public schools need more money. Throwing good money after bad is simply bad policy and malfeasance at its core. If there is clear evidence otherwise, please share it. Instead, let's get to the hard, perhaps inconvenient truths about why we get so little bang for the buck.

People are constantly complaining online about charter schools and how they're taking away from SLPS. As a parent in the city, the charter schools are necessary as the regular SLPS schools aren't performing. What if we could fund those schools and make the charter schools unnecessary? People are willing to move to places that have good schools, if we can improve the schools in the city, we could help turn around the population decline that's killing their funding.

@Joshua King As a city parent of two SLPS graduates I can't let your comment stand. There is absolutely NO evidence charter schools do better. The data is clear and publicly available . If they did, every district would want them. All they do is further fracture our community. Until we stand united behind OUR public schools they will continue to be under resourced..

Totally agree with this. So much funding has been deflected by tax abatements and this could help restore some of that. We have also allowed so much money to be used by charter schools to pay real estate develpers, thus moving even more money away from publicly governed public schools.

This isn’t a function of city government. SLPS is independently governed and has its own funding sources.

Yes, I understand that. The City of St. Louis provides funding to ARCHES which is currently unable to fund the necessary **immediate** need of Before & After Care to students. ARCHES could probably also fund an expansion of infant & toddler care.
