Downtown Curfew

From "Share Your Policy Ideas"

Go to the project

Perhaps we could implement and enforce a downtown curfew.

That would enable police to breakup any congregations on the streets late at night. It would also enable the police to question people roaming around looking for mischief.

Absolutely not. These policies are racist, fascist, and blatantly unconstitutional. If you want to make sure downtown doesn’t succeed, this would be the number one thing to do. Like Malik said, I get the intention here but this is absolutely not the way.

@Joshua Lawrence Most of the serious issues happen at like 3 in the morning. If large groups of people weren’t allowed to congregate, these shootings would stop. People read headlines and just assume they are going to get shot downtown at 10am which is ridiculous. I’m also certainly not saying that people can’t be out to go to work or come home. Also, I don’t see how this is racist, maybe a little fascist though. I’m trying to take the race out of the equation. Police randomly stopping people tends to become racist.

@Karlah Dorn ..."I don't see how this is racist, maybe a little fascist though. I’m trying to take the race out of the equation. Genuinely, how do you think the police would enforce stopping people to question those "people roaming around looking for mischief."?
@Joshua Lawrence that was answered groups of people.

While I get the concern here... this seems to explicitly conflict with the first amendment right to assembly and would be unconstitutional. If a ban of this sort were implemented downtown while I lived there, I would have left sooner. This would feel overly paternalistic especially for folks like me who commuted during the late evening or nights by train and foot. I do agree there should be some sort of measures to make people feel safer however.
