Cleaning and Maintenance Plan for 3500 Block of Cherokee

From "Share Your Policy Ideas"

Go to the project

As a part of my daily commute, I frequently walk along Cherokee Street near the South City Schnucks. During my walks, I hopscotch over litter, duck under overgrown plants, dodge bags of trash hanging from trees or fences, and hold my breath to avoid the unholy stench. While the house I own is on the opposite side of Gravois, many others use this route for their daily commute. Furthermore, residents along this block of Cherokee Street are forced to contend with these conditions at their front door.

Therefore, I propose that the city collaborates with Schnucks, Rent-A-Center, and Metro St. Louis to improve the cleanliness and the maintenance of the 3500 block of Cherokee and the public sidewalks along their collective perimeters by doing the following:

(1) Hire a street cleaning team for the initial upkeep of the general area to pick up litter, throw out trash, and trim overgrowth from public right-of-ways.

(2) Place trash cans along Cherokee and Grand and Gravois, especially at the following bus stops: Gravois @ Cherokee West Bound,Cherokee @ Gravois East Bound, Grand @ Cherokee North Bound.

(3) Place benches at bus stops and fix damaged bus stop signs.

The neglect of this area begets even more neglect, so we need to invest in care.

Take a look at my proposal for city wide. https://stlouis.govocal.com/ideas/transforming-st-louis-a-comprehensive-city-cleanliness-program I found a lot of references for how it can be done. What do you think?

The streets should be cleaned by the city, and these businesses pay taxes and should expect street cleaning on a public street. They should not have to hire a service to clean the city streets. They are responsible to keep their property in order. I think having trash cans placed on corners are not free. You have to pay for them to be emptied. At least that was what we were told in our neighborhood. Benches and/or sheltered benches at bus stops are Metro items. They repair so many times and then they pull them because people have no respect for other people's property. Which seems to be an on going theme in this city. People throw trash next to a trash can, out of car windows, etc.... Where are our elected officials? Alderpersons!!! we pay them, and we should expect them to want to live and serve in a pleasant environment. Especially in the north end. Empty the trash, blitz the vacant lots and clean them up. put a lien on the property if privately owned. Offer double time to refuse employees to work the weekend to clean up and empty the dumpsters. replace useless dumpsters with better ones. Engage the residents/renters to clean up their property. it can be done with the city taking the lead and the education of people to be part of the solution and not part of the problem. the city has funds: PPE , Rams $$$$. STL earmark some of these funds especially the Rams $$$ for cleaning up the environment in these depressed areas.
I think having accountability for businesses that generally create a lot of single-use waste items as a part of neighborhood clean-up would be great. I live near a Quik Trip, several fast food locations, and a bus stop. We have the same issue with litter. There aren't enough trash cans, they aren't emptied often, and the businesses where the trash begins aren't held accountable in any way. It would be nice to have a consistent accountability measure for these businesses.

@Samara Marks I don't believe these two are inherently at odds with one another.

This area is so ignored despite being part of the 8 route, a neighborhood street, a nice street for biking, and close to the Schnucks. Clean up in this corridor would really help.

Agreed. Neglect begets more neglect. I ride my bike along this block nearly daily. The fence behind Schnucks collects trash, drivers at the Cherokee/Gravois red light consistently toss trash out of the car because there's already trash everywhere.

I think this is a great idea! I drive past this area every day because I live in the 6th ward and it makes me sad to see all the trash and waste in our neighborhood. If there were more public trashcans around I think that would help, in addition to the street cleaning and sidewalk maintenance!

@Ren Bay Litter barrels in areas like this need regular pickup. In my neighborhood (TGS) litter barrels frequently overflow, yet are picked up efficiently (within 1-2 days) when a CSB report is made. However, I have to repeatedly make CSB reports on the same litter barrels. These barrels may be exceptions to the regular fill rate — they’re often filled with dog poopoo bags along high-volume walking routes. I’d hope for some sytem to keep any new barrels on S. Grand emptied regularly enoug to keep up with the high volume of foot traffic.
